First Thus Near Fine Hardcover 469 pages, glossaries, endpapers and boards are maroon and brown pattern on cream paper, brown faux leather spine wrap. This series was created to offer ''fine books for everyman with a dollar. It represents four years of experiment and research in materials and methods by leading typographers and designers. Their dedicated craftsmanship has set new standards for modern fine bookmaking. The paper sides as well as the inner end-sheets are copies of three different 18th-century patterns. Following the old hand-binding practice, each volume is tooled in genuine 24-karat gold on the spine, while a decorative gold fillet runs along each cover to join the siding paper with the overlapping spine material. The latter is embossed with five raised bands, forming panels for the titling legends and decorations. Each volume has colored headbands and footbands, and its three exposed edges are color-sprinkled in the ancient manner.''
